Michael Jackson dead at age 50

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Michael Jackson, the child star turned King of Pop who set the world dancing to exuberant rhythms for decades, died on Thursday. He was 50.

“Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Los Angeles Times,” the newspaper reported on its website.

Jackson had been taken ill at his home and found not breathing by paramedics who rushed him to a hospital, the paper said.

The paper’s report followed news of Jackson’s death first reported by the TMZ entertainment website, which said that the singer suffered a cardiac arrest. There was no immediate comment from spokespersons for Jackson.

Known as the “King of Pop,” for hits that included “Thriller” and “Billie Jean,” Jackson’s dramatic stage presence and innovative dance moves were imitated by legions of fans around the world.

His one-gloved eccentric style also earned him plenty of critics and another nickname, “Wacko Jacko.”

Jackson, who had lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation, had been scheduled to launch a comeback tour from London next month.

TMZ said on its website that Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. “We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back,” the site said.

Earlier, the Los Angeles Times said the singer had been rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital by fire department paramedics. The newspaper said paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the singer’s home before taking him to the UCLA Medical Center hospital.

COMEBACK CONCERTS

Jackson had been due to start a series of concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010. The singer had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months.

The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within minutes of going on sale in March.

His lifetime record sales tally is believed to be around 750 million, which, added to the 13 Grammy Awards he received, makes him one of the most successful entertainers of all time.

There were concerns about Jackson’s health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.

New Yorkers and tourists in the city’s Times Square were shocked at the news of Jackson’s death.

“I don’t know what to say. It’s sad, it’s really, really sad,” said Nicole Smith, an 18-year-old student from Brooklyn, New York, in Times Square. “My mother was a fan. I listened to his music.”

“I’m shocked. I thought someone was lying to me when I first heard it. I was a fan from when he was a little boy and then he got weird,” said Sue Sheider, 51, a teacher from Long Island.

CHILD STAR TO MEGASTAR

Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children. Five Jackson boys — Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael — first performed together at a talent show when Michael was 6. They walked off with first prize and went on to become a best-selling band, The Jackson Five, and then The Jackson 5.

Jackson made his first solo album in 1972, and released “Thriller” in 1982, which became a smash hit that yielded seven top-10 singles. The album sold 21 million copies in the United States and at least 27 million worldwide.

The next year, he unveiled his signature “moonwalk” dance move while performing “Billie Jean” during an NBC special.

In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley’s only child, Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. Jackson married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children, before splitting in 1999. The couple never lived together.

Jackson has three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, known for his brief public appearance when his father held him over the railing of a hotel balcony, causing widespread criticism.

“I always want to do music that influences and inspires each generation.” About twenty five years ago, Ronald Reagan was president. Bon Jovi was formed, David Bowie asked people to dance, Prince talked about the year 1999 (so long away) and Culture Club sang something about Karma. Then there was Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

The groundbreaking album was released on November 30, 1982 but dominated the charts the year after, spawning seven hit singles. It was cemented in the American Top 10 charts for 80 consecutive weeks, 37 of those weeks in the number one spot. And that’s just in the US. Across the globe, singles from Thriller reached number one on in the UK, France, Australia, South Africa, (just to name a few) charts. The album has been certified 27 (yes, 27) times platinum. But the album was not the only thing to be catapulted into history books.

Today’s superstars such as Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, and Usher all look to Jackson as a legend and emulate his signature moves such as the “moonwalk” and the “robot.”

Twenty-five years later, the world again celebrated the biggest-selling album of all time with a newly expanded version of Thriller. Today’s hottest artists like Kanye West, Akon and will.i.am put their own unique spin on classics such as “Billie Jean,” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.”

“It’s like putting certain elements in one hemisphere and it produces this magic in the other,” the King of Pop said of the album. “And getting in there with some of the great people, it’s just wonderful.” In other words, the world was thrilled. Again.

“DON’T STOP TILL YOU GET ENOUGH” (1979)The song reached No. 1 in 1979 and is the most successful track from Off the Wall. The video features a very dapper Michael Jackson in a tuxedo.

“THRILLER” (1982)The 14-minute video is considered to be groundbreaking, marking a new era in music videos. Released in December 1983, it ran as often as twice an hour on MTV. The album itself was the biggest-selling album of all time, with sales reaching over 104 million copies. It spent 37 weeks at No. 1. “[Michael] was always laughing and joking,” said Ola Ray, the female lead in the video. “He seemed very happy.” “This was where you really saw that videos could be taken to that next level,” Missy Elliott said.

“BEAT IT” (1982)Dancing and choreography aside, it was Michael’s red jacket that became iconic after this video was released in 1983. In the West Side Story-inspired plot, several real-life gang members were featured to add authenticity to the video. The song is the third album off of Thriller and earned Michael two Grammy Awards.

“BAD” (1982)The full 18-minute video was directed by Martin Scorsese, and starred Roberta Flack and Wesley Snipes. The story follows Daryl (Jackson) who returns to his derelict neighborhood after finishing prep school. And guess what? His old friends are not happy with the new Daryl. The song was his seventh number one single and was intended to be a duet with Prince but Prince later declined because “it would be a hit without (him)”. He was right. The album sold over 32 million copies.

“BILLIE JEAN” (1982)”Give me a section here I could dance on,” Michael told “Billie Jean” director, Steve Barron. And that he did. Because of its heavy rotation on MTV in 1983, Michael became the first African American to be featured prominently on the network, paving the way for future African American artists. “When they played it, it set the all-time record,” Michael had said. “Then they were asking me for EVERYTHING we had. They were knocking our door down.”

“SMOOTH CRIMINAL” (1987)There are actually four versions of this video with the original being in the Moonwalker film. The most famous aspect of the video is the forward lean where Michael and his dancers appear to defy gravity. In the video, ropes and magnets were used to achieve the special effect. On stage, the dancers wore special shoes. The technique was filed under United States Patent Law by Jackson in 1993.

“THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL” (1987)It was a family affair as Jackson’s sister La Toya was featured in the video. The song was the third single from Bad. In 2001, Michael performed the song with Britney Spears at his 30th Anniversary Concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

“LEAVE ME ALONE” (1989)A slightly ticked off Michael takes on the tabloids, headlines and rumors circulating him during that time (Wacko Jacko and Bubbles the Chimp anyone?). The video, which takes place in an amusement park-like setting, won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video.

“BLACK OR WHITE” (1991)The video was first broadcast on November 14, 1991 on several networks (it aired after an episode of The Simpsons on Fox). It stars Jackson’s friend, Macaulay Culkin. The last few minutes of the video were the subject of controversy due to his (Michael’s, not Culkin’s) sexual and suggestive dance moves. The song, which promotes racial unity, was the first single off his 1991 album, Dangerous and features rapper Bill Bottrell.Source: copy ad past on your browserhttp://www.z100.com/cc-common/news/sections/special/michaeljackson/http://future-world.com/cgi-bin/category/49355/artcat-2

The Top Ten Michael Jackson Stories: Part 2

Article by Patrick Omari

Michael Jackson was in the public eye from a young age as a part of the Jackson 5, and like him the stories started very early on.

Story Number 1i: Neverland

Neverland Valley Ranch, is situated in Santa Barbara County, California and was the home of Michael Jackson from 1988-2005. Neverland was named so after the make-believe land in Peter Pan – a figure or idea that Michael was thought to have idolized. He turned Neverland into his home and a private amusement park. There was a zoo, theme park, two railroads, a ferris wheel, carousel, zipper, spider, sea dragon, wave swinger, super slide, dragon wagon kiddie roller coaster and bumper cars.

Michael Jackson’s Neverland, it was initally reported, would be turned into “Foreverland” a permanent memorial to the King of Pop – a bit like Presley’s Graceland – so that fans and tourists from all over the world could travel to see the singers former home and a glimpse into his life.

Story Number 2i: The changing faces of Michael Jackson

The story of Michael Jackson’s plastic surgery is no secret and it has been incredibly well documented by the media.

Initially, Michael’s changing appearance was put down to puberty and adolescence, and weight loss. Michael first started to become slimmer in the early 1980′s following his desire to have a ‘dancers body’. After accusations of child abuse in 1993 and 2005 MJ underwent massive weight loss and was hospitalized on more than one occasion. However, eventually the press cottoned onto the idea that it was more than natural growth that was changing the way that he looked.

By the mid-1980′s it was noticeable that Jackson’s skin was gradually getting lighter his nose and his chin were changing and the shape of his body had changed. Some professionals suggest that Michael suffered from ‘body dysmorphic disorder’ as a result of the verbal ‘bullying’ and abuse that he had suffered at the hands of his father.

In 1986 Jackson was reportedly diagnosed with Vitiligo and Lupus. Jackson’s make-up artist suggested that initially Jackson tried to cover the lighter patches of his skin with make-up but eventually the condition became too extensive. Gradually, as a result of the treatment his skin lightened even further until he looked almost porcelain white.

However, it was not only Michael’s skin that appeared to be changing, it was also the shape of his face. Apparently, by 1990 sources close to the singer suggested that he had had 10 operations on his face in total. Michael had his first rhinoplasty in 1979 after damaging his nose in a dance routine. In his Biography MJ suggested that he had had two bits of plastic surgery on his nose and one on his chin. Any other changes to his face Michael insisted were due to adolescence, change of diet, weight loss, a change of hair style and performance lighting that was used and not extensive surgery.

Story 3i: Earth Song

Earthsong was the third single from the album HIStory and it was released on November 27, 1995. Although Jackson had written other songs that dealt with different issues this was the first that specifially dealt with the environment and animal welfare- which is what made it such an interesting record. It supported Jackson’s work as a humanitarian which was first noticed with the release of “We are the World” with Lionel Richie in 1985 and with the initiation of the “Heal the World Foundation” in 1992. He received the Genesis award for the song in 1995 which was an award given each year for animal sensitivity.

The song received a Grammy nomination in 1997 and was a top five hit in most European countries, while in the UK it still remains Jackson’s best selling single, having sold over 1 million copies. It debuted at number one where it stayed for six weeks in December 1995.

Story 4i: Child Abuse Allegations

1993 was the first time that Michael Jackson was accused of child abuse by the father of 13-year-old Jordan Chandler. Evan Chandler, had supposedly administered Jordan with a powerful sedative and under this influence his son reportedly admitted that the star and he had engaged in sexual acts. Experts later said, that the drug used makes patients highly susceptible to suggestion. Apparently, Jordan’s mother did not believe Jackson had molested her son and further investigations into his home found no evidence to support a criminal filing. Jordan refused to testify against Jackson after he had received an out of court settlement of 22 million pounds, Michael justified the pay out saying “I didn’t want to do a long drawn-out thing”.

Jackson was again accused of child abuse later in 2005 by Gavin Arvizo, a 13-year-old cancer survivor who had become close friends of Jackson. In a documentary both Michael and Gavin had spoken about sharing a room and bed which Michael had described as a “beautiful, charming and sweet thing”.

MJ was branded a ‘serial child molester’ during the 16 week trial in 2005. Jackson was accused of four counts of molestation including molesting a minor, intoxicating a minor, abduction and kidnapping.

Further allegations were then brought up that proposed Jackson had been groping five other young boys in the 1990′s including Macaulay Culkin. However, Culkin defended Jackson on the stand denying all charges that were held against him.

The verdict of the case found Michael Jackson to be not guilty on all charges; after assessment the jurors had thought the brothers stories to ‘not add up’.

Story 5i: Death

On June 25 2009 at 2:26pm Michael Joseph Jackson was pronounced dead, after he was found in a coma at his Bel-Air mansion.

Exactly how Michael Jackson died and the circumstances in which he did are still unclear. Reportedly homicide investigations are being made into his death, although it is thought that at present there is no evidence of criminal wrong doing.

Several media sources have reported that Propofol, a powerful anesthesia, was found in Jackson’s house after he died. Apparently the drug is a prescription drug, only used in hospitals and administered by IV to send people to sleep before surgery. Several medical experts have suggested there was no reason for Jackson to have had this drug in his home; although he reportedly begged for such drugs to help him sleep having suffered chronic insomnia before his death.

Supposedly, a coroners report suggested that MJ was actually in surprisingly good health and despite scarring on his face, several injection sites all over his body and bruises on his chest (due to CPR) there seemed to be no signs of a heart attack but it looked more likely that drugs had caused the heart to stop beating or the lungs to stop breathing. However, reportedly, the coroners office has ordered more tests to determine the Jackson’s Cause of Death. The office won’t rule on his death until toxicology and other additional testing has been completed.

Sources suggest that a memorial service will be held for Michael Jackson on Tuesday at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles where he had been rehearsing for his O2 London concerts.

End:

There is no doubt that Michael Jackson was the King of Pop despite his controversial lifestyle and person. He, his music and performances will undoubtedly be remembered forever.

Michael Jackson Life Story

Michael Joseph Jackson – Born from 29th Aug 1958 to 25th Jun 2009 – Love him or hate him, Michael Jackson or MJ as he was affectionately known was the indisputable King of Pop and was one of the greatest, if not the greatest singer, dancer and entertainer the world has ever known.

Born as Michael Joseph Jackson in Gary, Indiana, The world first got a glimpse of this superstar when MJ appeared on TV with his siblings, then known as The Jackson Five in 1968.

Although still a member of The Jackson five, he launched his solo career in 1971. His popularity as a great singer and dancer kept on spreading until in his 1982 album, Thriller became the world’s best selling album of all time.

Actually, the Thriller was only a precursor to 4 more of his chart busting albums – Off the Wall in 1979, Bad in 1987, Dangerous in 1991 and of course, HIStory in1995.

In the early 1980s, Michael went on to become the first African American entertainer to amass a legion of strong crossover fans following on MTV. The popularity of his music videos, such as Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller transformed the music video from a promotional tool into a a truly professional art form.

In his heydays, Michael Jackson donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial and charitable causes through his foundations.

A sad chapter of his life was when he was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993. However, the criminal charges against the singer were dropped due to lack of evidence. Then in 2005, MJ was tried and acquitted of further sexual abuse allegations and several other charges. His life was a miserable shamble then.

Michael Jackson was said to have a very unhappy childhood. Jackson recounted several times that he was physically and emotionally abused by his father from a very young age and was forced to do incessant rehearsals, had whippings and name calling. But he also credited his father’s strict discipline as playing a large part in his success as a top notched singer, performer and entertainer.

Michael Jackson first spoke openly about his childhood abuse in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey. He said that during his childhood he often cried from loneliness and would sometimes start to throw up upon seeing his father.

In another high interview, the singer covered his face with his hand and began crying when talking about his childhood abuse. Jackson recalled that his father, Joseph Jackson sat on a chair with a belt in his hand as he and his siblings rehearsed and that “if you didn’t do it the right way, he would tear you up, really get at you”.

The entertainer’s biggest moment was during the period of Thriller when his lawyer John Branca negotiated what he proudly announced then as the highest royalty rate ever in the music industry, approximately per album. Meanwhile, MJ raked in more profits from The Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, a documentary by himself and John Landis which sold over more than 300,000 copies at that time.

March 25, 1983, gave birth to the Moonwalk dance routine. He debuted this new dance form in live on the Motown 25′s Yesterday, Today, Forever television special, both with The Jackson 5 and on his own singing “Billie Jean”. His Moon Walk during the event were seen by more than 47 million viewers during its initial airing and drew comparisons to Elvis Presley’s and the The Beatles’ appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.

MJ’s compassionate golden heart was seen when he co-wrote the charity single “We Are the World” with Lionel Richie, which was released worldwide to help the poor in Africa and the US. Jackson was also one of 39 music celebrities and singers who performed on the record. The single became one of the best-selling singles of all time, with 20 million copies sold and millions of dollars donated to famine relief.

Another celebrity Jackson worked closely with was Paul McCartney and together, the duo had two hit singles “The Girl Is Mine” and “Say Say Say”. But unfortunately, this partnership fell through after some business disagreements.

In 1986, the media ran a story claiming that Jackson slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to slow down the aging process. However, the report was not true as it was later known that Michael had disseminated the fabricated story himself. He was promoting his upcoming film Captain EO and wanted to promote a science fiction image of himself.

In 1988, some two years after he was diagnosed with vitiligo, Jackson bought and befriended a pet chimpanzee called Bubbles, an act which extended his eccentric persona. In 2003, the singer claimed that Bubbles shared his toilet and cleaned his bedroom. Then it was reported that Jackson bought the bones of The Elephant Man.

Again these were stories that Jackson disseminated to the media. These incredible stories inspired the nickname “Wacko Jacko” although Michael would eventually despise the nickname. Realizing his mistake, he stopped leaking untruths to the press. However due to the profits raking in from these sensational stories, the media and the began making up their own stories.

Michael was born with medium-brown skin, but from early 1980s, his skin gradually grew paler. This change gained widespread media coverage, including rumors that Jackson was bleaching his skin.

Then in the mid 1980s, Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo and lupus, the latter was in remission in Jackson’s case, and both illnesses made him sensitive to sunlight. The treatments he used for his condition further lightened his skin color and with the application of pancake makeup to even out blotches, he could appear very pale.

The structure of his face changed as well with many surgeons speculating that Jackson had undergone multiple nose surgeries, a forehead lift, thinned lips and a cheekbone surgeries. Some of his colleagues also reported that Jackson was often dizzy and speculated that he was suffering from anorexia nervosa.

In 1992, MJ founded the “Heal the World Foundation”. The charity organization brought underprivileged children to Jackson’s ranch, to go on theme park rides that Jackson had built on the property after he purchased it. The foundation also sent millions of dollars around the globe to help children threatened by war and disease. The Dangerous World Tour began on June 27, 1992, and finished on November 11, 1993.

The entertainer with the compassionate heart performed to 3.5 million people in 67 concerts. All profits from the concerts went to the “Heal the World Foundation”, raising millions of dollars in relief.

In a high-profile visit to several African countries, his first stop to Gabon was greeted with a reception of more than 100,000 people in “spiritual bedlam”, some of them carrying signs that read, “Welcome Home Michael”.

In the Ivory Coast, Michael was crowned “King Sani” by a tribal chief. He then thanked the dignitaries in French and English, signed official documents formalizing his kingship and sat on a golden throne while presiding over ceremonial dances.

One of MJ’s most acclaimed performances came during the halftime show at Super Bowl XXVII. As the performances began, Jackson was catapulted onto the stage as fireworks went off behind him. As he landed on the canvass, he maintained a motionless “clenched fist, standing statue stance”, dressed in a gold and black military outfit and sunglasses, he remained completely motionless for several minutes while the crowd cheered.

The entertainer then slowly removed his sunglasses, threw them away and began to sing and dance. His routine included four songs – Jam, Billie Jean, Black or White and Heal the World. It was the first Super Bowl where the audience figures increased during the half-time show, and was viewed by 135 million Americans alone.

In May 1994, Jackson married singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of the other “King”, Elvis Presley. They had first met in 1975 during one of Jackson’s family engagements at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, and were reconnected through a mutual friend in early 1993.

As child molestation accusations became public, Jackson became dependent on Lisa Marie for emotional support. She was concerned about his faltering health and addiction to drugs. Lisa Marie explained, “I believed he didn’t do anything wrong and that he was wrongly accused and yes I started falling for him. I wanted to save him. I felt that I could do it.”

Jackson finally proposed to Lisa over the phone towards the late part of 1993, “If I asked you to marry me, would you do it?” Lisa Marie Presley and Jackson were subsequently married in the Dominican Republic in secrecy. At the time, the tabloid media speculated that the wedding was a ploy to prop up Jackson’s public image in light of prior sexual abuse allegations.

Their marriage felled through when Jackson and Lisa divorced less than two years later. However, they remained as good friends.

Michael then kept a low profile in most of 1990s and pleasantly surprised the world with the released of Invincible in October 2001. To promote the new album, a special 30th Anniversary celebration at Madison Square Garden occurred in September 2001 to mark the Jackson’s 30th year as a solo artist.

Michael appeared onstage alongside his siblings for the first time since 1984. The mega celebration also featured performances by Mya, Usher, Whitney Houston, ‘N Sync, and Slash, alongside other celebrities.

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Michael helped organize the United We Stand: What More Can I Give benefit concert at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The concert was aired on October 21st October 2001, and included performances from dozens of celebrity entertainers, including Michael himself who performed his song “What More Can I Give” as the finale.

Jackson’s third child, Prince Michael Jackson II (also known as Blanket) was born in 2002. The mother’s identity was never known because he said the child was the result of artificial insemination from a surrogate mother and his own sperm cells.

In November 2002, Jackson brought his newborn son onto the balcony of his hotel room in Berlin, as fans stood below. Holding him in his right arm, Jackson briefly extended the baby over the railing of the balcony, four stories above ground level, causing widespread panic and criticism in the media. Michael later regretted and apologized for the incident, calling it “a terrible mistake”.

Then in a 2003 Granada Television documentary “Living with Michael Jackson”, he was seen holding hands and discussing sleeping arrangements with a boy named Gavin Arvizo, who would later accuse him of child sexual abuse.

MJ denied the sexual abuse allegations vigorously, saying that the sleep overs were in no way sexual in nature. His good friend, celebrity Elizabeth Taylor defended him on Larry King Live, saying that she had been there when they were in the bed, watching television and reiterated that there was nothing wrong about watching TV together.

During the investigation, Jackson’s profile was examined by mental health professional Dr. Stan Katz. Dr. Katz spent several hours with the accuser too. The assessment made by Katz was that Jackson had become a regressed 10-year-old and did not fit the profile of a pedophile.

The trial came two years after Jackson was first charged. During this period, Michael became dependent on morphine and Demerol, a dependency which he subsequently overcame. He also suffered from stress-related illnesses and severe weight loss that would alter his appearance. The intensely watched trial lasted five months and MJ was finally acquitted in May 2005.

Michael was supposed to make a spectacular comeback and had been scheduled to perform 50 sold-out concerts to over a million people at 02 Arena in London from July 13 to March 6, 2010. During a publicity press conference, he had made suggestions of possible retirement after the concert series.

However, on June 25th 2009, Michael Jackson collapsed at his rented mansion at North Carolwood Drive in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles. Pending confirmation from toxicology reports, he was allegedly administered Demerol shortly before he stopped breathing. Attempts at resuscitating him by his personal doctors were unsuccessful.

The King Of Pop, Michael Jackson was pronounced dead at approximately 2:25 p.m. local time. Rumors and news of Jackson’s death broke internet web records triggering a cyberspace traffic jam giving Google, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo their highest traffic on record.
