Has George Carlin played a major role in disillusioning people from religion?

And has he helped the non believers find the courage to admit they don’t believe in a G**?

I really miss George Carlin

I’d never heard of him until he died so,no

  2. Beany says:

Yes, he is an atheistic martyr

  3. Lord of the View says:

He didn’t necessarily help me recognize the farce that is religion, but he certainly helped me phrase my arguments.

  4. Noiamnotagain says:

    Who is he?

  5. gutbucket says:

I’m sure he helped a few, but it’s the believers in religion and the bible which have played the most major role in disillusioning people from religion.

  6. Heathen says:

Carlin was an intelligent, amazing man. I was already disillusioned of organized Abrahamic religion before I discovered him,so he had no part to play in that.

    i miss him too
    he was my messiah

  8. Mfh H says:

I just found his videos, eh was great. I think he helped many people

  9. Robert Abuse says:

Ah George Carlin, he was great.

I don`t think he played any major role in disillusioning people at all, I think he merely pointed to how ridiculous the G** thing was in jest.

You do not need courage to see that there never have been any gods, it is blindingly obvious that there aren`t any.

  10. Izdigger says:

At least he got atheism associated with intelligence, despite the Christian smear campaigns.

  11. Crybaby Atheist says:

While Carlin was quite talented, I hesitate to say he either caused some to lose their faith or those already bereft of it to gain confidence in their non-belief.

Those who are already on the precipice of tossing faith into the bin are simply looking for validation. So, Carlin * may * have played a role in validating a position towards which this person was already heading, but I wouldn’t think his material caused one who was strong in their faith to re-examine it.

As for giving courage to others, I find that position confusing. Wouldn’t one who readily admits to having the courage to “face life alone” already have the courage to proudly state their position on the matter of G**?

I really liked Carlin’s earlier stuff, but, towards the end, his almost evangelical position in his atheism was a bit off-putting.

  12. Jerry says:

George Carlin was a great realist who made us laugh at our self’s and the hypocrisy’s of life.

  13. Pedestal 42 says:

I’d be a little surprised, and worried, if people really based life decisions on jokes, no matter how pointed and funny. (and many of them were.)
George Carlin was the double-barreled shotgun of satirical sniping, occasional misses and collateral damage and all. But when he hit, he really hit.

I might just be biased in favour of the late, great, Dave Allen.

  14. politics says:

I miss him. His favorite quote from him was “if you dont keep his commandments, hes gonna burn you, but he loves you”. Fundies may hate him for that, but its the truth. It makes no sense to burn something you love.
